James,
I live in Utah, and I'm actually on a backpacking trip in the Needles
district of Canyonlands National Park that weekend. So I guess I could
recommend that, though I've never been there. I've only lived here for 8
years (not very long with kids < 9) so I haven't sampled everything I would
like to down there.
But...
I picked up a book a couple of weeks ago called "best easy day hikes Grand
Staircase-Escalante & the Glen Canyon Region" - A Falcon Guide, by Ron
Adkison. (BTW, easy is a relative term - some of the hikes are certainly
long for a single day). Anyway, reading through the hike descriptions in the
book has me completely psyched to head down to the Grand Gulch - Cedar Mesa
area. We'll definitely be headed down there a little later in the spring.
So, without having been there, I would also recommend that area (and the
book as a cheap getting-started guide).
Good luck - and report back!
Mike
