I own an OM 40 bought in Hong Kong that has worked very well for the past 4
yrs. Admittedly I do not beat up my cameras, babying is more likely I would
say. But the program mode can come in useful and the fact that it retains OTF
metering with flash like an OM 2n is a real plus. I like using this on
occasions when I would not want to risk losing (to theft of forgetfulness ) my
mint OM 2n.

In my experience, the OM-40 is almost in a class by itself, and this is not
in a good way. I've never seen a 'beater' OM-40 (or PC) that functioned 100%.
They just seem prone to failure from rough use to me. I've also seen 100%
beautiful OM-40s that didn't work correctly either.
IMO, all of the 'consumer grade' OMs (double-digit bodies) don't hold up to
rough use anywhere near as well as the 'pro' single-digits do. As such, those
double-digit 'beaters' are to be avoided.

Hi all,
I have seen an OM40 in a local secondhand store, it's a bit of a beater
with dings in the bottom plate & nasty brassing around the strap lugs.
shutter 'sounds' ok as far as manual goes & auto seems to behave
similarly to my OM10. back foam looks like it's reasonably new.
film advance is smooth until the last 30-40 degrees of travel, than
some resistance is felt. takeup clutch seems a little loose but not
really any worse than my 10 (looking for information on this was how I
found the list!).
it comes with a makinon 28mm/2.8 lens for AUD120 (about US $60 given
the really dismal exchange rates!).
I am a little concerned about the film advance, this is the first
working OM40 I have seen. does anybody have any suggestions regarding
this body?
thanks
