Jim - I will try the 4 hour lamp timer, seems pretty idiot-proof (but
in my case we're talking Olympic-standard idiocy so it's a stern
test!).

I think the ones the guy was showing me are high end units with new
designs which are quite intelligent, so they might avoid the problem
with shorting. He claimed that the sophisticated one would detect dead
batteries, for example. I will raise this with the UK distributor
though.
I will have a look at Conrad and Thomas Distributing as well.
