There is sometimes a confusion about whether the viewfinder percentage
refers to linear or surface dimensions. The manufacturers almost
always use linear dimensions. A 92% viewfinder shows 92% * 92% = 84,6%
of the image surface -- still more than 80% but perhaps that's where
the number comes from. This corresponds to a 22.1mm x 33,1 mm cropped
image. I understand that most mounted slides aren't much more complete,
not to speak of industrial prints.
A 97% viewfinder shows 94,10f the image surface, corresponding to
a cropped image of 23,3mm x 34,9mm.
