I can't tell you what part of your gear to take, but here are some of my
observations based on my trip to Rome last year and my plans for a trip to
Florence this March.
Rome was fantastic, but I really needed a wide and fast lens for the
churches. The buildings are cavernous and dark. I took a zoom lens that
was totally useless. I wound up using a 50mm 1.8 for speed. Most places in
Rome were really understanding about using a flash.
The view fromt the top of St. Peters is gorgeous. You'll want wide angle or
panoramic shots of it. Trevi fountain at night is quite a sight. The
Coliseum is awesome. The Pantheon is a nightmare to photograph, but worth
the effort. I really feel that you need a wide and fast lens to get some
really great shots. Others may disagree, and I'd really like to hear their
comments for my own enlightenment.
I was concerned with street crime, but it wasn't that rough. You had to use
some street smarts all the time. I did get pick pocketed in one location
but all the guy got was a small bag full of exposed film (the Vatican
Museuems and Hadrians Tomb, darnit). I carried a Lowepro backpack that held
lots of stuff and was easy to hold onto. The thief unzipped the top section
while I was focusing my attention of a Michaelangelo sculpture and reached
inside. I was accosted by gypsies twice, much to the amusement of the
Police who just stood by with amusement and watched me deal with them.
This time I am taking an OM 2s, a 35-70 zoom, a 35 f2.8, a 50 1.8, and am
looking for a 24mm wide angle. We'll also toss a couple of APS point and
shoots in the bag. I'll take a good flash. Maybe a spare OM body. I don't
want to let the camera gear take over my vacation.
Enjoy the trip. It's a wonderful country to photograph.

My wife and I plan to vacation in Italy this spring. We'll visit Rome,
Sienna, Florence, and Venice, with side trips to Pompeii and the
countryside around Sienna. I'm already thinking about what camera and
lenses to take.
To ask the perennial impossible question: "What camera and lenses would
