Speaking only from my own experience and only of Agfa HDC and whatever
Walgreen's boxes up from Agfa, yeh, definitely, Agfa and Walgreen's is good
stuff within limits. The intense colors make it very suitable for flowers,
landscapes and similar subjects. Without a doubt the photos of such
subjects I've taken using Agfa film have received the most favorable
reactions from my family. It's very much like Velvia, but with greater
tonal range (comparing prints to prints, not prints to transparencies) and
somewhat more accurate reds and purples.
And, just as with Velvia, I'd suggest using something other than Agfa HDC
for photos of people.
A lot of folks are lamenting the demise of Agfa Ultra, especially those who
shoot landscapes of the Western US. Nobody ever claimed it was the highest
resolution film around, but the intense colors made that moot for many
folks. I never used it but am looking forward to trying its faster
replacement, due this year.
Do I think house brand films occasionally contain inferior versions of the
manufacturer's film? Yeh, probably. But I can't tell the difference
between Walgreen's Agfa and Agfa's Agfa. Nor between Polaroid's Fuji and
Fuji's Fuji. But Ferrania and Imation/3M are turds by any other name.
(And not to get off on a rant about tires, but since you brought it up, I
was never able to lean far enough into a favorite cloverleaf offramp turn on
my Honda to scrape a footpeg 'til I put a set of Dunlops on. Whoo-WHEE!
Immediately got stopped by a cop who was amused by my enthusiasm and let me
off with a warning.)

...Why scrimp on the film and processing that makes the pictures? You may
be able to determine who makes some of this film, but do you really think
it is Agfa's good stuff? Isn't it kind of like putting Winston tires on a
Ferrari?
