Two cases that spring to mind if considering size, weight, cost are:
Standard 50mm f1.8 (preferably the latest version...) great performance,
minimal weight, dirt cheap
35-70mm 3.5-4.5 minimum size and weight, good performance (not as good as
3.6), cheap (used to be...)
