My travels in the Pacific and South East Asia taught me the value of
haggling. Not so much as to get a lower price but as part of the sell.
The seller expected you to argue over prices. This was evident even in
most department stores. The price tags were just a reference point.A
rule of thumb was to offer 1/3 the price tag and that would usually
start the deal off. Expect to discount the price tag or starting price
by at least 50%, sometimes more,if the seller liked the way you
conducted yourself during the exchange. I don't know if this is the
current way of doing business but that's the way it was 18 or 20 years
ago.
