Not a dumb question at all. Jammed filters can be maddening to remove.
Trying to remove a jammed filter by gripping it tighter usually won't work -
the tighter grip will force the filter ring out of round, making it fit even
tighter.
Instead, try placing the lens filter side down on a flat, grippy surface
like a rubber pad (the back side of a mouse pad is good). Place a rear cap
on the lens to protect the rear element. Get a good grip on the entire lens
barrel and twist gradually and firmly while simultaneously pressing downward
into the pad. Don't get carried away to the point of cracking the filter -
you don't want to damage the front element of the lens.
If that doesn't work try one of those pickle jar lid openers from the
kitchenware department of the grocery store. They're shaped like a cross
between a can opener and a weird pair of pliers. One of the three or four
gripper rings built into those things should do the trick, altho' it'll
bugger up the outer surface of the filter's ring.
An oil filter removal wrench for a small oil filter should also work. You
might find one small enough at a lawn and garden or tractor supply store.
