The new AOL version 6.0 for PC's does email in plain text and HTML - all in
the same email message.
Mailing list managers around the world are complaining, and the folk who
have switched to the 6.0 version are greatly puzzled with the responses
they receive. Some list data base archives are built on the assumption of
plain text ASCII postings and are being messed up by the 6.0 stuff.
There are also reports of computers being profoundly trashed when a user
downloaded and installed 6.0 when it first became available.
I've search a good bit and find the complaints - but nary a solution in
sight. One day I phoned AOL support with a speaker phone and let it sit
for the long time it took to get a live support person. His first take was
"Problem with your computer." When I pushed I 'learned' that AOL does it
the way the customers want it.
One solution I saw for AOL customers was to use the AOL web interface to
write email. It was reported that the web interface still does only plain
text.
Go figure....

The only reason I have not been hounding all AOL users who are presently
posting to the list in HTML is because apparently the problem is AOLs new
version of the software.
However, if you are able to use a conventional mail program like Pegasus
then can I please urge that AOL users do so in the interests of digest
readers.
Pegasus should be available for download here - http://tucows.com
