Obviously check Battery is not dead first.
Also clean battery surfaces with rough cloth to remove oxide layer that
sometimes causes the batteries to act as if dead.
Check that the rewind button is not stuck at a funny position. Once in a blue
moon mine sticks after rewinding film and needs to be manipulated to release
properly.
If you are handy you can sometimes unstick things by removing the baseplate
(4screws) and manually moving the linkages that you can identify move when
you depress the release button. Requires some care and mechanical skill. Coke
down the release button or an open MD cover with lots of dust can gum up the
linkages!
