Techie and darkroom wizard Ctein discovered a few years ago that Kodak's
tech dept. has made a few boo-boos over the years. One of which concerns
the misconception that 18 0ray is the standard. It ain't. During some
in-depth research of Kodak's own ancient archives Ctein discovered that the
standard is 12%.
Despite these horrifying discrepancies we somehow manage to take the
occasional decent photo.
I've intended to download the lengthy threads from CompuServe's photo forum
documenting this...zzzzz...*fascinating* information. But somehow it
doesn't seem particularly relevant to me - at least until Kodak, Fuji, et
al, stop making light sensitive emulsions and I have to coat my own paper or
glass.
Anyway, John, I don't mean to sound dismissive about technical info that
*is* of importance to many photographers. It's just that I barely passed
those classes when studying photography and I'm a lazy sot where such stuff
is concerned. Thank goodness for film that tolerates more than 1/3 stop
error.
