The first OM1 I had (in 1976 and still going strong!) developed this
fault, due to insulation breakdown. It was fixed by Olympus UK and has
never happened since. It was a known problem in early OM1's
apparently, but shouldn't affect OM1-n's. The flash shoe contact is
polarised (as others have pointed out); can you connect to the coaxial
socket and does the problem arise then?
You can get a coax - shoe adapter that isn't polarized, if your flash
does not have a coaxial sync lead.
