I suspect most SLRs are subject to focus errors, whether due to the
mirror or focus screen position. All things considered it's a wonder
they work at all. Rather like a bumblebee flying. Somehow it manages
to do so despite itself.

I feel the same way, Lex - think of how many times the mirror flips up
and down during the lifetime of an SLR; then consider the battering it
must get with a motor drive attached. To me, however, the mechanism of
a rangefinder seems even more complex and vulnerable. I understand
that, in the Leica "M" series RF cameras, the rangefinder mechanism
alone contains around 200 parts! Apparently, misalignment of the
rangefinder with the lens is a common problem with RF cameras that have
subjected to long use or accidental damage.

I'd be interested to hear of people's experience in this area: are RF
cameras more likely to develop focusing problems that SLRs?
