I would have to respectfully disagree. I never feel safe when traveling the I 95 between here and Florida, and am very cautious at any rest area in much of the US. On the other hand, I feel little apprehension when traveling to countries like Costa Rico.
Before I am going to be convinced either way on the gun issue, I would need
to see a study in which similar populations in the same part of the country
are observed over a multi-year time period to see what happens. Gun rates
may not have gone down in Oz when guns were removed, but were they already
lower than ours? States that permit guns may have lower crime rates than
another state that denies gun permits, but would that change if things were
reversed? It is not possible to clearly tell. I have heard that murder
rates in some parts of our country correlate well to income levels, but in
other parts the murder rate is similar across the income levels, why the
difference?
I will say that a baseball bat or knife is less likely to kill an innocent
bystander than a bullet. But I will also admit that a match is less
discriminating than a bullet in who it maims or kills in a fire.
