Bogen (Manfrotto) makes a clamp, and I've seen others that will attach to a
chair or any object ~ 1.5 inches deep. I use them for product
demonstrations.
They have a socket for a light stand adapter. Most light stand adapters
have 3/8 and/or 1/4 20 threads. Put a stand adapter in the socket, screw in
the shoe connector and you're in business. I use them all the time.
If you want to get really serious, Bogen also has a device called the Magic
Arm. I put these in the clamp and then screw the tripod device onto the
Magic Arm. The Magic Arm will hold ~ 50 lbs. They also make a version
call the Variable Arm (something like that) I don't like it quite as well.
Magic Arms sell new for ~ $75-80. I buy them used at Midwest Photo for $29.
They are listed in the Bogen video catalog section, not the photo section.

yeah, I've seen those. What I wanted was something clever so I wouldn't
even have to carry a tripod...I dunno, like a big clamp or something. Just
fishing for ideas...;)
