Those of you who appreciate the OM system for offering finely engineered
camera systems in a compact and cost effective package may wish to check
out Yamaha's MCR-X100 "mini-stereo system".
After parting with our system of nearly 20 years: a large 'pieces and
parts' component system comprised of Akai, Sony, Technics and Teac parts
taking up an entire wall, I was quite dubious that a diminutive shelf
system could really offer anything that I wanted. But after hearing the
amazing sound of the Yamaha mini system, it's now my only system for
everything from Brazilian beat to Zydeco. I think of it's finely crafted
silver receiver and CD player and it's rich gloss black speakers with much
the same fondness that I have for my silver and black OM-1n.
Those who like lots of bass may want to add some subwoofers, but for the
price that the otherwise complete Yamaha goes for (under $500US street)
that could easily be accomplished. I tested similar setups from Sony and
Aiwa and was not at all impressed, but the Yamaha convinced me that I
didn't need to spend large to get very good sound. (Much like the OM system
convinced me that I didn't need to spend huge amounts to get a very
respectable, compact camera system.)
