Well, someone already said that this isn't in the FAQ because you'll get 250
different answers... So here's answer #97:
Light and low cost: I'd add a 28/2.8 and a 100/2.8 to your 50/1.4. I don't
have the 100/2.8, but do have the 100/2 (big, heavy, 55mm filters). The
100/2.8 is highly regarded here though, and it would be better for a
lightweight kit. And they aren't too expensive... hmmmm, that gets me
thinking...
The 85/2 would be a good alternative to the 100/2.8, perhaps a little more
expensive and harder to find.
For a little more flexibility, and a little more weight and size, replace the
100 with the 75-150/4
The 35-70/3.5-4.5 (NOT the 35-70/3.5-4.8) is highly regarded here as well.
Very small and light. I personally like something a little wider, though.
The 28-48/4 is also fairly small and light. They don't seem to be very
plentiful, though, and it doesn't focus very close, compared to the 28/2.8
When I travel light, I'll pack any of a number of different ways, depending
on my requirements and my mood:
If I take just one lens, it might be a 50, or the 35-70/4 (bigger and heavier
than the 3.5-4.5, and takes 55mm filters. Hmmm maybe I need a
35-70/3.5-4.5...)
frequently I'll take just the 28/2.8 and 100-200/5 (I don't have the
75-150/4... yet...). Sometime I'll substitute the 24/2 for the 28/2.8, but
the 24/2 is rather bigger, heavier and takes 55mm filters. Guess I need a
24/2.8 too, huh?
OK, I better stop here. Whenever I reply to these threads my bank account
dwindles. What was that now? A 35-70/3.5-4.5, a 100/2.8, a 24/2.8, a
75-150/4.... Christmas is only a few months away...yeah, that's it...
Christmas...
