It is definately a new design. I own them both and they are completely
unrelated. The 35-80 is longer and thinner than the 3.6, although it uses
an unusual 62mm filter size.
I also own the 85/2 and the 100/2.8 and find the 85 brighter, but I guess
that's just personal experience.
