Even if with a doubler you could get as good quality resolution, sharpness,
and contrast -- which is beyond my experience and belief -- there will
almost always be a huge difference between handling a long prime or a zoom
and a long lens on a doubler. That's just the physical length. Remember
that you lose two stops of brightness through the viewfinder with a doubler
too. To me it's just too much like trying to put a pair of pants on an
alligator. (Can you tell I don't like doublers?)
If there were a good tripod mount for the 2X-A it might be worth
experimenting. Unfortunately the one for the 85-250/5 and 300/4.5 is just a
little too big.
