I *have* followed it, but I confess to simply metering through the
polarizer. And I typically tweak the focus and fiddle with the polarizer a
little more before actually shooting. This is almost always with auto
metering, and I find I get very good results this way, since the polarizer
seems to act a bit like a scrambler/averager of the reflectance values in
the FOV. This doesn't correct for backlighting or sun in the frame, etc.,
but it works in very many standard situations. Furthermore, when I have
had a glare or light source in the FOV which I knew would mess up the
exposure, I've taken center-weighted readings through the polarizer of a
adjacent FOV which is unproblematic, noted the settings, switched to manual
mode, and made the shot. Half-stop brackets are sometimes useful, but for
gun-to-the-head quickness, that's how I would do it.
When I have the time to set up a very deliberate shot, I will sometimes
check the reading without the polarizer and then add the polarizer and
re-meter. If the difference matches the filter factor, I just go ahead and
shoot. If it doesn't, I try to evaluate why and adjust.
Have a great trip.
