He's looking at the 2N manual, not a plain 2 which can use shoe 1, 2 or 3.

Subject: [OM] OM-2 Hot Shoe Question
| Hi, gang!
|
| I'm slightly confused! (Nothing new for me, really, so please bear with
| me!) I just bought an OM-2 on e-Bay, and it doesn't have a hot shoe.
| So, I trotted down to my local used camera store, and asked for a Shoe 3
| because that's what the Unofficial Olympus Sales Info Site says I need in
| order for my T-20 to work properly. The used camera sales guy pulls out
| an OM-2 manual (which I also didn't get with the camera) and says, "Let's
| check just to be sure."
|
| Lo and behold, the OM manual states the OM-2 uses a Shoe 4 to attach a
| T-32 or T-20 flash. So, used camera guy pulls out a Shoe 4 but when we
| try and attach it to the body we notice that it has two little pins for
making
| the electrical connection to the body, and the body only has one little
hole
| to accept the pin. Huh?!?!?
|
| So, we dig around in his Olympus "goodies" box and finally dredge up a
| Shoe 3 that's kinda beat-up and cracked. We attach not-so-hot Shoe 3
| to the body, and then attach my T-20 (that definately works because I
| use it all the time on my OM-10).
|
| We have some problems getting the T-20 to flash (works sometimes, but
| not always), which I attribute to the shoe being not-so-hot. But, the
light
| in the viewfinder won't light-up at all, and it doesn't appear that the
T-20
| and the body are working automatically together. (And I have the
| calculator reversed like it should be, so that's not it.)
|
| (Sigh!!!!)
|
| So, here's the question... Which shoe *does* the OM-2 require to get
| the T-20 to work properly??? Shoe 3??? Shoe 4??? Also, if the Shoe 3
| is the right one, am I correct in thinking that the reason the T-20
doesn't
| flash all the time is probably because the Shoe is beat-up and cracked?
| Or, is it possible that the body has a problem????
|
| Oh, yeah, I guess I should also say that the T-20 flashes all the time
| when it's attached to the OM-2 using a bounce grip and a flash cord.
| That's why I kinda figure the problem was with the Shoe 3.
|
| Thanks, in advance, for any help you can offer.
|
| Regards,
|
| Chris
