Joan,
I have experience with both ends of the price scale. The best bang for the
buck is the Acer Scanwit at around $400, scans batches of 4 slides at
2700dpi. At the other end of the scale is the Polaroid Sprintscan 4000 at
around $1400, also batch scans 4 slides, but at 4000dpi. The difference is
noticeable on a 13x19 print, but for 10x14 or smaller, it's not that
noticeable (I have an Epson 1270, so I regularly print 13x19 - awesome).
Lots in between, such as the Canon 2710 and the Nikon LS-30, both at 2700dpi
and possibly better than the Scanwit, but more expensive.
There is a great filmscanners list that you can sign up at
http://www.halftone.co.uk/ I think several of us here belong there too (I
know at least one does).
Good luck. With a good scanner and printer, you have an amazing color
darkroom.
Tom
