Morgan,
I've been using Ed's software since version 2 or thereabouts. I am
currently at 6b15. It's real nice, but it takes a bit of getting used
to. I use it all the time with my PhotoSmart. Without Vuescan, I'd have
long ago gone to another scanner (not to say I wont' but the budget's real
tight right now.)
Highly recommended for ALL users of Ed's supported scanners, which includes:
Nikon LS-30 and LS-2000
Polaroid SprintScan 4000, Microtek ArtixScan 4000
Minolta Dimage Scan Dual, Multi, Speed, Elite
Acer ScanWit 2720S
HP PhotoSmart (SCSI)
HP PhotoSmart S20 (USB)
Polaroid SprintScan 35 Plus
Polaroid SprintScan 35/LE
Polaroid SprintScan 35/ES
HP SCSI flatbed scanners
MicroTek and AGFA SCSI flatbed scanners
Nikon LS-20 and LS-1000
Canon CanoScan FS2700
Canon CanoScan FS2710
The only alternative is SilverFast's software at
http://www.silverfast.com/english/. And it doesn't support the Photosmart
for all of us cheapo's. Only the Epson, Artix, and Nikon.

A few of us have been discussing this off-list today, and since there
are many others here who use Hamrick's "Vuescan", I thought I should
mention that the latest Beta versions are worth downloading. The latest
one, released today, is fully functional on the Nikon Coolscan and SCSI
PhotoSmart I have access to.
The improvement on the PhotoSmart is dramatic. IMO it's reputation as a
noisy scanner, particulartly with slides, is now undeserved. Use the
highest setting to appreciate the improvements.
Hamrick's main page gives no hint that this version is available, so you
need to go to the Vuescan 5.9 link to download it.
