Andy,
I think you may just have revealed your problem . . . much as John H.
described. The X-Sync is 1/60th on all the OM's with the exception of the
OM-2000. One note about the OM-10. If you use the manual adapter to set
the shutter speed, the instruction book recommends dropping down to 1/30
when using flash. You might still be able to get away with it at 1/60th,
but it is iffy. If it really fired at 1/250th with the flash, then your
shutter curtains never fully opened across the film gate, but a slit less
than film gate width travelled across instead. Been there, done that,
about two decades ago with a brand new OM-10, manual adapter plugged in and
a 50/1.8 Zuiko (although the lens has little to do with it). It leaves
half to a third of the frame black!
When using a OM T series flash that would automagically switch the OM-10 to
X-Sync and 1/60th (when flash is fully charged), I always unplugged the
Manual Adapter and stuffed it into my pocket to keep it from overriding the
X-Sync shutter speed as John H. mentioned. After I was done using the
flash it went back on the body.
