You weren't shooting without the motor drive cap were you?
I don't generally recommend DIY camera repair, but I've done the foam
replacements myself. I like to use denatured alcohol after scraping as much
out of the grooves with a toothpick. I take a pair of pliers and
smash/flatten a Q-tip and chase the groove after saturating with DA.
Tape a piece of paper over the shutter to keep crumbs out that area.
John H. recommends applying a little contact cement to the clean groove
before installing the new foam. This keeps the foam from pulling out years
hence when it starts to get a little sticky again.
