That's right. . . .Nikon had a "pro" buzz right from the start.
Remember that when the first Nippon Kogaku lenses came out, Japanese
goods weren't well regarded. . . .paper mache trinkets, and the pressed
tin car toys. (I remember as a small boy looking in the wheel wells to
see what it was made from: usually a can of Sanka or Heinz.) It was
Nikon--and especially Sony--that changed that. Nikon aimed for the pro
market with full-featured system SLR's, while most other makers,
including Olympus, were prying consumers away from their Kodaks with
cute little 1960's rangefinders.
Also, it wasn't easy to become a Nikon dealer. You had to be a very
good camera store, while any decent Mom-and-Pop could sell Konica,
Minolta, Canon and Olympus. To an extent, that's still true today.
