Yes, both versions of the 80/4 Macro must be used on some sort of an
extension. Either extension tubes, the auto 65-112 tube, or the
bellows. There are two reasons: 1) As you mentioned, it has no full-travel
helicoid, only a fine-tuning helicoid; and 2) Both this lens and the
135/4.5 have very long, protruding rear elements. They would not fit on an
OM body without mirror lockup. But that wouldn't be practical for focusing
reasons. (I know this might sound bizarre to some to mount a lens on an
SLR and not be able to see through it, but that's standard practice on many
superwide, non-retrofocus lenses like a Zeiss 21mm Biogon, Zeiss 16mm
Hologon, or Leica 21/3.4 Super-Angulon. You lock up the mirror and use an
accessory finder for framing. Focusing is done via scale focusing, which
isn't a big deal given the enormous depth of field of these lenses.)

Is it true that the 80mm f4 must be used on the bellows or Auto tele
Extension tube (because the lens only has a fine focus helicoid and cannot
full-focus on it's own)? I haven't seen one of these in years.
