This one is a bit of a sore point as Olympus at least developed an 85mm
f1.4 lens prototype with a a GRIN element (GRadient INdex of refraction).
If they had put it into production would it have been a first for any
lens manufacturer?
A GRIN element is one where the index of refraction of the glass varies
smoothly from the centre to the edge. Apparently with this type of glass
it is possible to have a flat sheet which acts as a lens.
