I recall reading an online comment that for 35mm lenses, the hood should
be approximately equal to the focal length of the lens itself. I tried again
to find that particular reference, but I couldn't. Anyway that means a hood
that is TWO inches deep for a regular 50 lens!!! I have such a hood (Pentax
49mm filter thread, for short teles), but have not had a chance to experiment
with it. Using it on a 50, I could not see any obvious vignetting in the
viewfinder.
I definitely plan to get a much longer hood for my 100F2.0--possibly the
metal Zeiss hood for their 85F2.8. Also, I plan to get a 28mm Pentax hood for
their 28F2.8 lens. This bayonets on, but I may consider modifying it or lens
to work together. I personally would prefer rectangular hoods that bayonet on
or tulips. Does anyone know of a firm which will produce custom hoods!
