OK, time to get some more opinions: took a look at the Bogen line to get
an idea for things, and both the pan/tilt and ball heads are about the
same. Pros/Cons of each?
I'd advise anyone who doesn't know what they want to start with a
ball, and get a pan later if they feel the need.
A ball-head -- ESPECIALLY the Bogen 3265 "joystick" -- is very fast
and easy to set and re-set.
The main disadvantage is if you only want to move in one plane, which
you most often need when following action. For this reason, many ball
heads have a separate pan feature. On the 3265, if you slowly press
the lever, the pan releases first, although I don't really know what
the differential force between the pan and ball is. (I wouldn't use
this technique heavy things near the weight limit of the head.)
Summary:
1) If you know you'll often want to do movement in one axis while the
other two are locked down, get a tilt/pan head.
2) If you know #1, but will have to do it in fine movements, get a gear head.
3) If you don't know either of the above, get a ball-head, preferably
one with a separately adjustable pan, since that is the most-often
used case for #1.
