Well, it sounds like the alkaline cell is old and is not putting out 1.5v any
more. If it were, you'd expect the meter to read HIGH not low since the correct
voltage for an (unmodified) OM-1 is 1.35 delivered by the now-unavailable
mercury cell. Your only options without modifying the camera or getting a collar
to use 675 hearing aid batteries, are to either find a source of mercuries or
buy the Wein zinc air which is a direct replacement, although not without it's
drawbacks.

Having read recent threads about OM1's and meter readings, its rather ironic
that I seem to have the same problem myself, in so far as my OM1 seems to be
under reading by at least two stops.
The battery is a PX625A, Alkaline Cell, made in China, inserted by the
previous owner. Clutching at straws, could this be the problem? If it isn't,
any other suggestions?
