What I'd like to see is a a CCD 43mm square, which would equal the
diagonal of the 35mm frame. This would give a larger area than
thatof the standard 35mm frame, but still use the full image circle
produced by 35mm camera lenses. Of course the body would have to be
different. But it would be easier to design a body which does not
have to be turned to change formats. The so-called user interface
would be easier when one can assume a particular orientation of use.
For example, all of the letters and numbers inside the viewfinder
would be in their correct orientation, and the top of the camera
would remain the top of the camera.
Since there is no need for a box to contain a reflex mirror, almost
any lens could be put on the front. With the appropriate adapter, a
lens from any system could be used. Of course the adapters might be
quite complex, given the different focusing and diaphragm interfaces
that are so varied. But the interface between the adapter and the
digital box would be electronic. So all the mechanical complexity
would stay in the adapter, which shouldn't be too expensive. It would
be cheapest for range finder lenses of course, and also very cheap
for manual focus lenses such as Olympus.
Sooo... when can we expect this?
