Not having seen the schematic, I'll note that an LED makes a dandy
photodiode -- with the added advantage of being spectrally matched to
the source, assuming you use the same kind of LED as a source. But do
go for a clear packaged one, rather than the more common ones in
colored plastic.
In fact, most glass-packaged silicon diodes make dandy photodiodes
when reverse-biased.
I'd think either of these would work for non-critical usage, which
surely includes the sub-millisecond realm of mechanical shutters --
especially since it's just feeding a comparator, and so linearity
isn't important.
