That's the supercharged V12 Rolls Royce engine with the short "zoomie"
exhaust pipes, correct?
The merlin? I love the story that the first spitfire engine's frontal
envelope was set by sitting a pilot in a chair with his arms at his
sides and tracing his outline. (ObOM: From the first time someone put
an OM-1 body in my hands and showed me how to hold it, it's seemed that
Maitani used the same kind of approach -- take two hands in comfortable
picture-shooting position, locate the controls in the obvious places,
build a camera inside the resulting envelope. Or like the carved wooden
block prototypes for the walkman series...)
