It was once explained to me, though this is possibly apocryphal, that a "berliner" *would* be the Berlin equivalent of a frankfurter, i.e. some sort of sausage whose origin is peculiar to Berlin. So a "New Yorker" would be something whose origins are inextricably associated with New York, I'd guess. -- I think that a 'Berliner' is a sort of doughnut in that part of Germany.
