I shot a lot of my 2nd grader's soccer last fall, and I used an 80-200 for
950f the work. Some people might not understand that the fields at this
level are very small. They're not regulation size, by any stretch. The
3-400mm you might need on a regulation field (I shot a lot of soccer in
college) are too long unless you are at the opposite end of the field. I
just position myself at each end, depending on where my daughter was
(offence or defense) and stay at that end. As for film, I shot 400 Print,
it has a good latitude, and is easier to have my family look at than slides.
Enjoy,

My daughters are about to start soccer (football for the rest of you).
They've never played, which means I've never shot it. I have almost
unrelated questions:
1) What film would most people recommend (color, don't flame me). Normally
I would expect clear bright skys but want to stop the action.
2) Lens choice: My thinking is my Vivitar Series 1 70-210 one-touch. Seem
reasonable?
