Denton had said his political positions as a New Yorker might be more at
home in Europe than in the balance of the United States. I was trying to
express solidarity from the heartland. The allusion is to President
Kennedy's speech in Berlin, c. 1961 (for you youngsters at home).
Let's see if I can guess your meaning. A "berliner" is some sort of
pastrie? Is a bagel referred to as a "New Yorker" out east? News to me.
Anyway, if I were president I'd stay out of Frankfurt and Hamburg.
