Use a tripod! In fact, that is the best way to test shutter speeds and
aperture combinations. Don't use Kodachrome...use one of the other E6 films
(probably the cheapest you can find) which has quick turnaround. You are not
interested in some of the esoterica of the films, but the accuracy and
idiosyncrasies of you camera. The slide film, pointed at a known object under
a controlled light situation, preferable verified by a hand held meter
outside the camera, will tell you worlds of information about your camera's
mechanics and the meter accuracy of it's on board reflected metering system.
Make sure your outside meter is capable of incident metering.
Good luck...the above is only a suggestions for how to quickly find out what
is happening. The whole shoot shouldn't take more than about 5 minutes to
give you a world of information. It also doesn't matter (depending on your
need for detail) what or where you shoot.
Have a wonderful holiday and best wishes.
