Got some great answers and suggestions, including:

That makes sense, and uses equipment I have now. What film did you
typically use? I'm leaning towards CZ800 (my color film of choice for
outdoor night sports and concerts) for color and either Tri-X or
TCN400 for b&w.

That may be too much artillery for what I need. From scoping out a
few of the gyms, it looks like 50-180 will cover most everything I
need. I'll be able to get nearly under the goal and will likely do
most of my shooting 15-20'from the goal. I've considered mounting a
wide angle and shooting right under the goal, but being trampled by
6 foot high schoolers ranks pretty low on my list of fun things to
do.

Hmmm - GN120 and TTL? I'm intrigued. Sounds like a visit to the
Sunpack website may be in order. Does it zoom at all?
On a related note, does anyone make a F-280 clone (i.e. works in
super FP mode) with a GN of 100-120?
