I use a polarizerwith my 24/2.8 all the time. You just have to be
careful if there's a lot of sky in your background.

As mentioned earlier, I'm a big fan of the 200/5, and also of the
49mm filter approach. This makes it awfully easy to pack a small bag
and be ready for 900f the photos you'd like to take (where is that
pocket size 1200/1.4 when you need it?). My "ready bag" consists of
my 24/2.8, 50/1.8, 100/2.8, and 200/5 with a couple of filters
(Circ.Pol, 25, yellow).
If you're inclined to take the zoom approach, you could always opt
for the combination of a 35-70/3.5-4.5 with either a 75-150/4 or a
100-200/5. Would make a fine vacation kit.
