In fact, it's much easier to design a sharp varifocal zoom than a true zoom. If
you're willing to accept this, you can get excellent zooms from Vivitar and
Kiron. And they usually come cheap, because most people see these lenses as less
desirable. But if sharpness is what you desire, varifocals are a great way to
go.
