As usual, Gary's tests are eye-openers, causing me to think
about what are the qualities of a lens that make it a favorite
one. For me, it's obviously not sharpness, although I admit to
relying on Gary's tests for maximizing it whenever possible.
I'm trying to understand what the lenses I like have in common
from these tests, and am finding that perhaps a "moderate" contrast
is part of it. I wonder how many other characteristics besides
sharpness & contrast lenses have that end up affecting their
"flavor", or as Mike Johnston puts it, "optical signature" (what
a long term !). Also, some lenses seem to work far better with B&W
than with color films for my particular eye.
