There are other ways to control the contrast of an image without sacrificing sharpness (which is sometimes wanted). One can use an lower contrast film like an Agfa RSX 50 or Fuji Astia. It is also possible to reduce contrast by overexposing and underdevelopment an film (pull development). I tried it out works very well. For the contrary effect I suggest Fuji Velvia and for even more contrast underexpose it with ASA 80 and overdevelop it (push development). A push +1 development with this film results in very contrasty images with good blacks. The resulting ASA80 of an +1 development suggest, that Velvia is in reality an ASA40 film. Anyway, exposure is critical after this process, one should test out the film before taking any important pictures. Naturaly with an pull developed film, one has a larger margin for the exposures. Notwithstanding this, a test film would a good idea too, just to get used to the low contrast.
