I think they were introduced in 1995 with the OM-3Ti and 35-80/2.8 zoom. They
are significantly brighter than the 1-x screens, but still fairly easy to
focus with, in my opinion.
I think the screen in many of the AF cameras are made bright at the expense
of "snap" in focus. I guess teh assumption is that since AF is so good
nowadays you dont need to manually focus (NOT!). Except in extremely dark
conditions I find them harder to focus with than a screen which is more
coarse and darker. DOF effects aren't as apparent, either.
For me the easiest camera to focus is still my OM-1 with a 1-x screen. It is
almost as bright as my OM-4 with a 2-x screen, the image is huge, and the 1-x
screen really snaps into focus.
But I still wish Oly had a 2-10 screen. Maybe I need to get the Beattie...
