I don't think it's the LED per se, but overall the MX meter has not been
super reliable after 20 years or so. I believe the part that goes bad is a
variable resistor somewhere in the system. I'm sure the LEDs themselves
are more immune to shock than a galvanometer. There is a lot to be said
for simplicity in a meter circuit.
