To me it seems like what you need to do is:
Take El Cheapo scanner.
Remove glass.
Disconnect light source.
Fit scanner to the end of a box (you will need to calculate the size of the
box).
At the other end of the box mount your $20 Zuiko 50mm f1.8 (reversed
possibly).
At this stage you have a nice big A4 sized digital macro box camera.
Mount slide or negative on a light box of some sort, you'll probably need a
very bright light. Make sure you don't cook the film.
Scan away.
Putting ground glass, paper etc. between the scanner and the slide/neg will
always degrade the quality.
