* plastic insulating tape
Would that be the same as black electrical tape?

'Twas I.
I haven't seen any evidence of surface damage with the adhesive on plastic
insulating tape, which is what I've used, but perhaps finish durability has
changed over the years. Certainly I've experienced a marred black finish
with one of those JCII stickers, but it had been there for many years before
I decided to remove it. You could remove the tape more often than the couple
of years that I suggested to inspect it and clean up the old sticky. As an
alternative, you could wrap the part of the strap that will contact the
camera with a piece of velvet type material and glue that down.
