I think I meant to say, I wouldn't be able to get the tip of my pinky finger

This sounds *very* painful! I couldn't my past the tip of my pinky! I
think I will go for the shoulder strap.
I'm not sure who suggested it, but I like the idea of protecting the area
around the strap eyelets with a piece of tape. My only concern, would be
the tape glue damaging the black finish.

No, not quite; it only goes till the first joint, and it's quite firmly
stuck there and safe. The only downside is, if I let the camera hang by
said strap, it'll turn my findger blue. Bad. So it's always in
readt-to-shoot grip, with this added safety precaution.
