Interesting... So I guess "removing" does indeed mean "philing" ?
I tried the 65-200/4 on a cheapo Vivitar 2x TC and it looked like a very
nice zoom range (130-400/8), so I'm very tempted to "make it work" with the
Oly 2xA too, however, I don't like the idea of philing these protrusions
away, though...
Now for a comment in the message you replied to:

True, this TC only fits on a few of the supertelephoto lenses...
> and that the 2X-A would fit most Zuiko tele lenses (at least physically).
There are quite a few lenses it fits on, but also a few on which it doesn't,
and unfortunately the 100-200/5 seems to the only zoom on which it
physically fits...:(((

Check Hans' e-sif for a list of which lenses fit on the converter, at least
for the 2xA there are a few more lenses which do fit it, but which aren't
mentioned in the list of lenses the TC is "matched" for. These additional
lenses would include at least the 300/4.5 and the 500/8, and probably also
the 250/2, 350/2.8, 400/6.3, the 600/6.5 and the 1000/11 (to get a 2000/22 -
DUH!!!).
As you already mentioned, the 1.4xA is a much more difficult TC to use with
any lens, and I think it only works with the majority of the super teles.
Cheers!
